The Dusky Maidens

Lelani Burgoyne

A new Pacific women’s creative collective called the Dusky Maidens gathered at Victoria University recently to celebrate the achievements of literary pioneer Albert Wendt. FitzBeck Creative helped sponsor the event which also showcased the talents of Karlo Mila, Richard Langston and Dr Alice Te Punga Somerville. A highlight of the night was hearing excerpts from Albert’s new novel, which is written entirely in verse!

Go Merivale

Merivale report

It’s a beautiful spot – but not for everyone. Merivale in Tauranga is among New Zealand’s most deprived communities and residents there face significant economic and social challenges. But help is at hand. The Merivale Community Centre has developed a new community-building model based on extensive research and grassroots action. Positive and Proud is a publication that charts their progress to date.

This report works as an effective communication piece because it summarises complex issues well, presents solid evidence to back it up and provides real life examples with strong visuals. They’ve really gone the extra mile to communicate. FitzBeck Creative has helped shape and design this material. If you want your research or policy report to be read give us a call.

Making the most of a
conference

Akirata

Nearly 400 people from throughout the Pacific health sector gathered in Auckland for the second Pacific health providers fono - Akirata: Achieving Excellence in the Pacific Health Sector. The biennial, two-day conference, which attracted Pacific health professionals from all over the country as well as the Pacific, featured a wide variety of keynote speakers and provider workshops.

One challenge is to share good practice and ideas. FitzBeck attended the Akirata Fono, interviewed a wide range of experts and produced a range of print, web and DVD resources to communicate the latest developments.

Conferences are an ideal opportunity to source communications material that can have multiple uses.

Keeping Kids CyberSafe

Cybersafety

Early childhood services are making greater use ICT technology in their teaching and learning than ever before. Children are skyping, blogging and googling like never before. ICT provides wonderful opportunities but also contains some risks.

FitzBeck produced CyberCitizens and CyberSafe, a 20 min DVD to guide ECE services, parents and communities about cybersafety measures. It features the insights of educators and representatives from NetSafe, Hector’s World, the NZ Police, the Department of Internal Affairs and Decipher Ltd.

A feature of this project was the collaborative model used to produce the DVD which enabled many people and organisations to have input during its scripting and development.

Client feedback: “Thank you for the continued effort that your team has put into this project. We appreciated the rapport you developed with the ECE staff and children … and your ability to meet the tight timeframes.”

Welcoming Wellington – a multimedia

WWRS

Key concepts put to music and supported by the right images can create a very memorable and effective communication. FitzBeck created a short multimedia to launch the Settlement Strategy for the Wellington region at Te Papa. We also designed the Strategy publication and assisted with writing and editing services.

Client feedback: “Thanks so much for your support in the production of the WRSS documents and the multimedia presentation. The documents looked great and everyone enjoyed the multimedia presentation. Well done!”

Anti-bullying campaign

Step Up Campaign

FitzBeck Creative went back to school to work alongside students from Rangikura School and Heretaunga College in developing a pair of anti-bullying resource booklets. The booklets were written by the students and designed by FitzBeck on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

The booklets – titled ‘Step Up, Be Safe (Be Proud) – contained information, tips and games to help students combat bullying in their school environment. One copy of the booklets went to every school student in the country from Year 3 up.

The close collaboration with students gave students a sense of ownership of the resource created and helped FitzBeck create a vibrant, funky design that students of all ages could relate to.

Client feedback:
“We really appreciate how flexible, receptive and patient you have been… You were fantastic in working with the students.”

The power of stories

AgITO Annual Report

Showing the difference that training makes is a continual challenge for those in the education and training business.

This year, FitzBeck Creative headed to the country to interview farmers about how training helps their business. The material featured in the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation’s 2007 Annual Report, which we also designed.

The story is very different for dairy farmers and sheep farmers. For dairy farmers, training is the key to sustained growth, for sheep farmers it’s the key to survival in these tough times.

It’s vital to capture the human truth behind statistics, says FitzBeck writer, Mike Fitzsimons. “Taking the time to meet with farmers and understand their reality makes all the difference to the communications you can develop. Telling their stories is what makes the communication vivid and memorable. Stories have the most impact.”

Client feedback: “Thanks for the huge effort you put in to produce our 2007 Annual Report. It looks fabulous. The case studies are excellent. Well done.”

FitzBeck sponsors The Material Mansfield

The Material Mansfield

FitzBeck Creative was delighted to be a sponsor of the very successful Material Mansfield exhibition, curated by the Katherine Mansfield Birthplace Society.

We were responsible for designing The Material Mansfield, Traces of a Writer’s Life, an exquisitely produced 116-page publication. With its superb photography, the book is a permanent record of many of Katherine Mansfield’s intimate possessions that were shown at the exhibition. The Material Mansfield also includes her thoughts from abroad and captures the intriguing personal style of New Zealand’s most famous writer.

The Material Mansfield was a very rewarding project, requiring design flair in keeping with its subject and meticulous attention to detail. We have a limited number of copies to give away. If you are a Mansfield enthusiast, you are welcome to call in to FitzBeck Creative at Level 1, 15 Marion St for a free copy of the book.

Client feedback:
“I write to thank you and your wonderful team for turning the idea of the book/catalogue The Material Mansfield into such a truly stunning reality.”
